He graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1982. He completed his Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry residency at Haydarpaşa Training and Research Hospital in 1988.

In 1990, he started to work at Istanbul University, Istanbul Medical Faculty, Department of Child Health and Diseases. He received the title of Associate Professor in 1998 and Professor in 2010. He worked as the Head of Medical Biochemistry Department at Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine until 2017.

22 scientific articles included in international scientific indexes have been published, and over 600 references have been made to these articles. He has over 100 papers presented in congresses. There are chapter authors in national books. He is a member of the Turkish Society of Clinical Biochemistry.

Fluent in German and English, Prof. Dr. Tolunay Tavil Özdağ is married and has one child.

Main areas of interest:

He established and developed the Congenital Metabolic Diseases Diagnosis and Follow-up Laboratory. He applied quantitative amino acid analysis in body fluids and organic acid analysis in urine for the first time in our country.
Between 1990-2006, he continued the practices of Phenylketonuria Newborn Screening in Istanbul. T.R. He was a member of the Advisory Board in the "Neonatal Screening Program", which was initiated under the responsibility of the General Directorate of Maternal Child Health and Family Planning of the Ministry of Health.
By starting the Biotinidase Deficiency Newborn Screening for the first time in our country, it paved the way for this test to be included in the Neonatal Screening Program.
Established the Extended Neonatal Screening Unit.
