Gastroenterology is a specialty that researches the problems and disorders of the digestion system and its organs - focuses on the gastrointestinal tract (GI). The GI tract starts from the mouth and continues to the anus - it includes the digestion system organs such as the stomach, intestines, liver, etc. 

Gastroenterologists are the doctors that specialize in this studying area since it requires the separate studying to diagnose and treat patients more carefully.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a procedure that allows the examination of the body part with a medical instrument called an “endoscope”. The endoscopic treatment is generally applied to the gastrointestinal tract (GI), however, it can be also applied to other parts of the body.

The procedure starts from the mouth, anus, or from the other natural opening of the body - note that it may start with a small incision in some cases. An endoscope allows doctors to see problems, and abnormalities, take samples and see the inside of the organ in more detail.

Stomach Ulcer Treatment

Stomach ulcer, as known as a gastric ulcer in the community, is a disease that occurs in the stomach - it may be a sore or lesion around the stomach. When the layer which protects the mucus of the stomach starts to weaken or be damaged by different things, the stomach acid the tissues. 

Stomach ulcer affects metabolism since it occurs around or in the stomach, therefore it needs to be treated correctly and should be effective. Along with changes in diet, lifestyle, and medications that would be prescribed by your doctor with researching your medical history, it can be treated.

Colon Polyp Treatment

Colon polyps are typical growths around the colon or rectum - through the lines of them. Generally, they are not harmful, but may be or become a threat over time Therefore, it's important to start treatment immediately after the diagnosis. 

You may get the polypectomy which allows and removes polyps through the areas. If they are too big to be removed by polypectomy, surgery is mostly needed in these cases. Both processes can be supported by medications and changes in daily life.

Colon Cancer Treatment

Colon cancer occurs when the cells around the colon or rectum start to grow with abnormalities and unruly. It is important to research the family and medical history during the treatment, it may give clues about the source of the cancer. 

Surgery is mostly the chosen first step of the early treatment to remove cancerous tumors. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or other therapies that are effective to kill cancerous cells are other methods that would be used during the treatment. Your doctor will run needed tests, and research to choose which one is the best and most effective.

Gastric Cancer Treatment

Gastric cancer occurs when the cells around the stomach start to grow unruly - not in typical and healthy order. During the treatment, family and personal medical history need to be researched detailed so that the reasons can be decided - this would help your doctor to choose the best treatment option.

Surgery is the primal option for gastric cancer to remove these unruly cells by removing tumors. Endoscopy may be applied before the surgery to see tumorous places inside. 

Different types of therapy such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, etc. may be applied as well.

Liver Diseases

The liver is a vital organ that provides so many different functional things to our body including detoxification, nutrients to our blood, synthesis of the proteins for the body and metabolism, and more. A mini list of liver diseases can be listed like these:

  • Cirrhosis: It’s characterized as the late stage of liver cancer. It may lead to liver failure if the treatment is not taken.
  • Hepatitis: It’s an inflammation of the liver caused by the viruses named Hepatitis A-B-C-D-E that have different backgrounds. Immune diseases may affect it as well.
  • Liver Cancer: Liver cancer occurs when the cells around and inside of the liver start to grow unruly.

Liver Cirrhosis

Liver cirrhosis can be evaluated as the late stage of liver disease. Scarring is the reason for the destruction of healthy cells. It worsens and disrupts the function of the liver and its cells. Sources of liver cirrhosis may stem from family disorders, certain types of Hepatitis such as B or C, immune system disorders, and more. 

The reasons may shape the treatment since the main goal of treatment is slow or block the growth of the disease.

Gallbladder and Biliary Tract Diseases

Gallbladder and biliary tract diseases affect the biliary system and its organs. Since this system is important for digestion, it is important to diagnose them immediately. Here is the most common disease of this system:

  • Gallstones: Gallstones are one of the most common biliary tract diseases that generally consist of bilirubin or cholesterol. The sizing of them may be different and  they cause severe abdominal pain.

Pancreatic Diseases

Pancreatic diseases are diseases that affect the pancreas. Along with other parts, it plays an essential role in the digestion and regulation of certain things in the blood. Here is a mini list of pancreatic diseases:

  • Pancreatic Cancer: Pancreatic cancer occurs when the cancerous cells happen to be seen in the pancreas. They’re considered as dangerous since the pancreas is vital to the digestion system.
  • Pancreatitis: Pancreatitis is the inflammation of this organ. It may happen suddenly or may be passed through genetics.

In 2009, he received his Gastroenterology specialization from Başkent University Faculty of Medicine. He is a member of Turkish Gastroenterology Association and Turkish Liver Association.
