CHEMICAL PEELING

Chemical peeling is the process of revealing the underlying skin by peeling off the top skin with a chemical drug that contains fruit acids and salicylic acid. Chemical peeling, which is divided into 3 types as superficial, moderately deep, and deep, is applied to eliminate facial wrinkles, skin blemishes, acne and acne scars, black spots and colour imbalances. After the application, the skin becomes healthier, shinier, and smoother.

Chemical peeling is a cosmetic medical procedure in that the experts improve the skin of the face, hands, and neck. We use chemical solutions to remove the top layer of the skin in this skin rejuvenation procedure. The name of the procedure derives from that process.

Chemical peeling can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and reveals more youthful skin underneath. The procedure also reduces acne, scars, and uneven skin coloring. There are three different types of peeling used in chemical peeling cosmetic procedures: superficial, medium, and deep.

Advantages of Chemical Peeling

Chemical peeling is known as a cosmetic procedure that reduces the effects of aging on the face. Chemical peeling can help you with many skin problems. Some of the treatments used in chemical peeling procedures can be lined up as below:

  • Acne: Acne is one of the most common skin conditions. The chemical peeling can kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, increase absorption of topical treatment, and breaks down comedones.
  • Aging: Chemical peeling reduces the aging of the skin including liver spots, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, dryness, fine lines, age spots, and roughness.
  • Hyperpigmentation: Chemical peeling can heal other forms of hyperpigmentation. Injury scars, surgical scars, freckles, melasma, and uneven skin tone are among the subjects that chemical peeling helps to reduce.
  • Dullness: Chemical peeling can help with dullness and your skin looks brighter after the treatment.
  • Precancerous grows: Deep chemical peeling decreases the risk of cancer
  • Rosacea: Rosacea is a condition that causes redness on the skin. Chemical peeling can also be used as a treatment for that.

Types of Chemical Peeling

Which types of chemical peeling will be applied to the skin depends on your condition. The dermatologist decides the type of chemical peeling after a short examination.

  • Light chemical peeling: Light chemical peeling usually helps with fine wrinkles, acne, and dry skin. Mild chemical agents are used in this procedure.
  • Medium chemical peeling: This procedure is usually used for wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone. You may need to visit several times to your dermatologist for the full treatment.
  • Deep chemical peeling: Deep chemical peeling removes the epidermis, an upper and middle layer of the dermis. In this chemical peeling procedure, very strong chemicals are used and that may require using of local anesthesia before starting the procedure. Deeper wrinkles, deeper scars, and precancerous skin patches are treated by deep chemical peeling. This is a very long-term solution. The effects of the procedure last almost ten years.

Chemical Peeling Procedures

The chemical peeling procedure has three main steps; pre-treatment, treatment, and post-peel. 

  • Pre-treatment
  • There are ways to improve the positive results of treatment. For instance, studies show us that consistent use of night creams improves the treatment.
  • Treatment

In the treatment period with chemical peeling, a special combination of chemicals is applied to the skin. You can see the frosting of the skin, but that depends on the type of chemical peeling used. At the final stage, cooling pads and a mild moisturizer are applied to the skin.

  • Post-peel

After the treatment, you should avoid sun exposure for about a week at least. As a side effect, redness and peeling will last for up to 7 days which is normal.

Who is Eligible for a Chemical Peeling?

Generally, individuals in good overall health are eligible for chemical peeling. It's important to disclose any underlying health conditions, allergies, or sensitivities to the healthcare professional performing the procedure to ensure it is safe and suitable.

Chemical peels can be performed on individuals of various ages, but they are more commonly recommended for individuals above the age of 18. Teenagers may require parental consent, and the type and strength of the peel may vary based on the individual's age. Also, skin texture may be a factor to find out who is a patient eligible for a chemical peeling.

Almost anybody can have a type of chemical peeling. Light, medium or deep. However, as is seen in any other treatment, chemical peeling may not be suitable for everyone. Some of the conditions that chemical peeling is not suggested can be lined up as below:

  • If you have extra coloring in your scars
  • If you have some skin conditions that make your skin more sensitive than average
  • If you think you can’t stay out of the sun during the recovery period.
  • If you have abnormal skin scarring

In addition, if you have a darker skin tone, it is a greater risk of darkening your skin after the treatment. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
