Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves the use of breast implants to increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts. The procedure can be performed for cosmetic reasons, to restore breast volume after weight loss or pregnancy, or to correct breast asymmetry. The incision is made in the fold under the breast. This is a common location for the incision because it is well hidden and allows the surgeon to easily access the breast tissue.

The main goal of the breast augmentation procedure is to increase the size of the breasts. Women have cosmetic and medical reasons for having breast augmentation. Some women only want bigger breasts for aesthetic reasons. Some other women consider breast augmentation after a mastectomy, pregnancy, or nursing.

Breast augmentation is a very common surgical procedure that is done to increase the size of the breasts. The breast can be augmented either using breast implants or carrying out a fat transfer. One of these two categories is suggested by the surgeon depending on how you want your breast to look and feel.

In this article, we mention what a breast augmentation surgical procedure is and who is a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. You will also read about the subjects such as how breast augmentation is performed, how long a breast augmentation procedure takes, and the recovery period.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that usually lasts about one and a half hours. Before having breast augmentation you should learn as many details as possible to avoid disappointment after the surgery. There are certain things a breast augmentation can do or not. For instance, breast augmentation does not last a lifetime. Mammograms might be more difficult after having breast augmentation. Breast implants won’t prevent your breast from sagging.

The good news, an average life-cycle of a breast augmentation is about ten years which gains you a lot of time to decide on a reoperation. During that time you should visit your surgeon regularly to make sure about the condition and placement of your breast implants.

Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

A plastic surgeon will decide if you are a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery. Taking a decision, the surgeon has some criteria. Before this, you should know that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have breast cancer or an abnormal mammogram, your breast surgery should be postponed. Also, the same goes for you, if you are ill, battling with an infection, and have unrealistic expectations from a breast augmentation surgery.

You may be considered a natural candidate if;

  • You are in good health,
  • You do not smoke and do not consume much alcohol
  • You can work as a team with the medical staff
  • You have realistic expectations from the results of the procedure
  • You can understand the risks and the benefits at the same time
  • You consider the recovery period as important as the operation itself

How is Breast Augmentation Performed?

The first thing you should know about a breast augmentation surgical procedure is that it is done under general anesthesia. That means you will be in deep sleep, and feel nothing during the breast augmentation procedure.

The surgeon will do some incisions around your breasts, for instance, along the edge of your areola or via your armit or crease under your breast.

The implants can be inserted by the surgeon in two ways. There are two different ways the implants are inserted by the surgeon. The first one is to insert them under your breast tissue and in front of your muscle. The second one is to insert them behind your breast muscle. The placement of implants depends on some different factors. For instance, how much you want your breast to be increased and the implant type you want to be placed.

What Are The Different Types of Breast Implants?

Breast implants are the most common type of breast augmentation and you have several options, if you consider a breast augmentation.

There are seven different types of breast implants surgeons utilize during the breast implant procedure.

  • Saline Breast Implants: Implants are filled with sterile saline which is salt water. If the implants were to break, your body absorb the saline and get rid of them.
  • Structure Saline Breast Implants: Structure saline implants contain salt water and have an inner structure to make them more natural.
  • Silicone Breast Implants: Silicone breast implants contain silicone and make you feel more natural tissue.
  • Form-stable Breast Implants: Form-stable breast implants are also known as gummy bear breast implants. They contain thicker silicone.
  • Round Breast Implants: Round breast implants make breasts look fuller than other implants.

Smooth Breast Implants and textured breast implants are among the breast implant types.

How Long Does Breast Augmentation Surgery Take?

A breast augmentation surgery that utilizes breast implants usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. You can go home the same day, but you may need to stay at the hospital one night for the following day's procedure. You will take some pain relievers if you feel any discomfort after the surgery. However, sometimes the surgery takes longer depending on the factors like location of the incision, the type of anesthesia used, and the type of implants you prefer.

You will have regular visits to the medical center where you have breast augmentation, before and after the procedure of breast enlargement.

What is the Recovery Process Like After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

The breast augmentation operation is done under general anesthesia. After the surgery, you will be taken to an observation room while you wake up from the surgery.

It usually takes a few weeks for the full recovery after having a breast augmentation surgery. You should stay home and not go back to work for at least one week, maybe two. You should also avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercises. After one or two weeks, your stitches will be removed. After six weeks, your scar will disappear. Frequently Asked Questions

Ekol Hospitals’ experienced team of 3 esthetic surgeons perform breast augmentation procedures for years and are using the most updated methods, using worldwide known implants. You can meet one of our surgeons and talk everything regarding your concerns and the methods they use.
The newly produced implants last for a lifetime. You will have no need to change them in the upcoming years. We are only using worldwide known, imported and approved implants such as MENTOR, Motiva or Polytech. You will also be given the guarantee cards and certificates. High profile or low profile type of implants can be used depending on the patient. Patient can choose between round type or teardrop type of silicones however the surgeons mostly recommend the round type due to its stability and more satisfying results.
Dual plane, sub muscular, sub fascial and sub glanduller placement methods can be used depending on the breast tissue of the patient. A small incision is performed under the breast and the implant is put through this incision. The scar will not be visible from outside since it is under the breast and silicon based gels will be used in order to help the scars fade out.
You will be given a medical BRA and need to carry it for approximately 4-6 weeks long. This will also help you with the healing process. The surgery and implants doesn’t harm the mammary ducts so you can get pregnant and there is no harm for breastfeeding.
This is often one of the most difficult decisions, and for many reasons, has the most potential for disappointment. During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will work with you to identify what size of breast you desire from augmentation. "Breast size" as measured by bra-size is variable and is often not a good way to measure final size. As a general rule, every 125-150cc of implant volume equals an increase in a single cup size. However, every patient's body is different. By working with your surgeon and their clinical team, you can set obtainable and healthy expectations together. It is helpful for you to bring in a bra the size you would like to be to help in finding the right sized implant for you.
This depends on your job and its physical demands. Some general guidelines are: Upper arm movements, like reaching, should be avoided for the first 1-2 weeks. Lifting anything heavier than 5 kgs should be avoided for 6 weeks after the operation. This lifting restriction may prevent some women from returning to work.
Women may start driving a car one week after surgery as long as they are not taking any pain medications.
The length of the surgery can vary depending on the extent of the reduction and the specific technique used. In general, breast reduction surgery can take several hours.
Breast reduction surgery typically involves making incisions around the areola and down the front of the breast. While these incisions are usually hidden in the natural folds of the skin, they will leave scars. The size and appearance of the scars will depend on the extent of the surgery and the individual's healing process.
Breast reduction surgery can affect a woman's ability to breastfeed. However, it is possible to breastfeed after the surgery if the milk ducts and nipples are not damaged during the procedure. It is important to discuss your breastfeeding goals with your plastic surgeon before the surgery.
Most people will need to take some time off work after breast reduction surgery to allow for proper healing. The specific amount of time needed will depend on the individual's job and the extent of the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will be able to provide you with more specific guidance on this topic.
