Diagnostic ultrasound is a machine that uses sound waves to produce images of structures in your body. Images can provide extremely important information for diagnosing a variety of diseases and conditions. Ultrasound examination is usually done using a standard ultrasound device, some may require insertion of a small device into the body.

Ultrasound waves are generated by a transducer capable of both emitting ultrasound waves and receiving their echoes. Within an ultrasound scanner, the transducer emits a focused beam of sound waves into the body. These sound waves travel through the tissues and encounter boundaries between different types of tissues along their path.

In this article, we will answer the question, “What is Ultrasound?” We will also have a look at Ekol International Hospitals’ ultrasound machines and the expert team. In the final part, you can read about the services offered by ultrasound.

What is Ultrasound?

Ultrasound, also known as a sonogram, is a medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to view the inside of the body. Ultrasound scans are done to view the fetus in the womb, to make a symptom-based diagnosis, or to support the surgeon.

An ultrasound scan takes about 30 to 60 minutes on average. It is done by a doctor, voyeur, or sonographer in the radiology department of a hospital.

There are different types of ultrasound, which vary depending on which part of the body is being scanned and the reason for being scanned.

  • External Ultrasound scan: This type of ultrasound is used to see the unborn baby in the womb or examine the heart. An external ultrasound scan can be used to examine internal organs such as the liver and kidneys.
  • Internal Ultrasound: Internal ultrasound provides doctors to see the organs such as the prostate gland, womb, or ovaries closer for a better examination.
  • Endoscopic ultrasound scan: In this procedure, an endoscope is inserted into the mouth to examine the stomach or food pipe. This tool has a light and endoscope at the end.
