Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a procedure in which the surgeon intervenes with a laser to remove prostate tissue from an enlarged prostate that is blocking urine flow.

Benign prostate or enlarged prostate is among the most common health problems experienced by men over a certain age. It manifests itself in approximately 80% of men by the age of 70.

The HoLEP procedure uses a holmium laser to remove excess prostate tissue that is causing the urethra to be blocked. Laser energy is directed precisely at the prostate and vaporizes the overgrown tissue. Thus, it creates a wider channel for urine to flow through the urethra.

In this article, we will mention what HoLEP is. We will also have a look at Ekol International Hospital’s Holep machines and the expert team of Ekol International Hospitals. In the final part, you can read about the services offered by HoLEP.

HoLEP

What is HoLEP?

Holep is a procedure that uses pulses of laser light to remove tissue inside the prostate surrounding the urethra. We know that HoLEP has great advantages over some other methods. The most important of these is the large volume of prostate tissue that can be safely removed. Holmium laser pulses allow the surgeon to push the tissue. HoLEP allows working from the outside of the prostate to the inside, towards the urethra, resulting in an efficient result.

HoLEP is considered a minimally invasive technique and is often preferred over traditional open surgery (transurethral resection of the prostate or TURP) for certain patients, especially those with larger prostates. It typically results in less bleeding, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times compared to traditional surgical methods.

Services Offered by HoLEP

  • Anesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general or spinal anesthesia, ensuring the patient remains pain-free and comfortable during the operation.
  • Holmium Laser Enucleation: During the surgery, a small instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra to access the prostate. The holmium laser is then used to carefully enucleate (remove) the excess prostate tissue that is causing urinary obstruction.
  • Post-operative care: After the procedure, the patient is closely monitored in the recovery area to ensure stable vital signs and to manage any immediate post-operative concerns.
  • Follow-up: A comprehensive follow-up plan is established to monitor the patient's recovery and address any potential complications.

It is important to note that medical practices and procedures may evolve, and the services offered by a specific medical facility might vary. Therefore, it is always recommended to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or urologist to get the most up-to-date and accurate information about HoLEP and the services provided.
